From 1880 until his collapse in January 1889,
Nietzsche led a wandering existence as a stateless person
(having given up his German citizenship,
and not having acquired Swiss citizenship),
circling almost annually between his mother’s house i
n Naumburg and various French, Swiss, German and Italian cities.
His travels took him through the Mediterranean seaside
city of Nice (during the winters),
the Swiss alpine village of Sils-Maria (during the summers),
Turin, Genoa, Recoaro, Messina, Rapallo, Florence, Venice,
and Rome, never residing in any place longer
than several months at a time.

Some of my artworks will always be there in my imaginary archive, they “pop up” in my head every now and then, because they are dear to me. These are the works that I want to show on my blog in the “collections”-series, as an homage to their owners.
The people who “live with” my drawings, paintings and sculptures are cherished by me, I am and will always be gratefull to them. It is a precious experience to me when I’m allowed to take my work to its new surroundings myself, only then -it seems to me- I can appreciate it as an independent piece of art.

De werken in mijn denkbeeldig archief en de collecties waarin zij zijn opgenomen zijn een steun en toeverlaat. Zij die houden van-, zich ontfermen over- en willen leven met mijn werk worden door mij dan ook op handen gedragen. Het blijft een bijzondere gebeurtenis om het werk in de nieuwe omgeving te mogen bekijken en het meestal pas dán als een op zichzelf staand iets te kunnen zien.

The exhibition ‘OUR GARDEN‘ opens on June 8 from 17:00 to 19:00.
Address: woon- en studiocomplex ‘t O-tje,
Bakkerstraat/Struitenweg as ‘the greenhouse’ Rotterdam Charlois.

‘OUR GARDEN‘ is an exhibition that shows the ways in which a natural environment can lead to visual abstraction and how naturally abstraction can be placed back in a natural environment.

The exhibition features the following artists:
Marjolijn van den Assem (NL), Tonio de Roover (NL),
Ghislain Amar (FR), Andre Pielage (NL).
Each of these artists make explicit use of their natural environment. Their artworks are their worlds brought back to abstraction. The drawings of Marjolijn van den Assem literally start as fieldwork, the sketching of landscape, seeking for the remains of Nietzsche. Ghislain Amar studies the ways in which an environment can be captured and does this in an almost philosophical way. And both Tonio de Roover and Andre Pielage make sculptures and installations that intervene with the landscape their itself.

You can also visit the exhibition during the “Hidden Gardens” festival in the weekend of June 9 and 10 (from 10.30 to 16.30) and during the art route Charlois in the weekend of June 23 and 24 from 10.00 to 17. 00.

“Voor het Verborgen Tuinen Festival Rotterdam 2012 heb ik zowel in de tuin als in de bijbehorende project-ruimtes van huizencomplex ’t Otje in Charlois een tentoonstelling samengesteld met de volgende kunstenaars:
Marjolijn van den Assem (NL) Tonio de Roover (NL)
Ghislain Amar (FR) Andre Pielage (NL)
Ieder van deze kunstenaars maakt in zijn artistieke proces nadrukkelijk gebruik van zijn of haar natuurlijke omgeving. Hun kunstwerken zijn hun leefwerelden teruggebracht tot abstractie.
Zo beginnen de tekeningen van Marjolijn van den Assem letterlijk als veldwerk, schetsend in het landschap en dezelfde paden als Nietzsche bewandelend. Haar tekenprocessen en de uiteindelijke tekeningen zelf gelden als een natuurlijk proces opzich. Ghislain Amar doet een haast filosofisch onderzoek naar hoe het op een bepaalde manier vastleggen van een omgeving een gevoel van sublimiteit kan geven. Tonio de Roover laat ons de spontane schoonheid van het landschap herzien door zijn subtiele materiaal gebruik en tot slot doet Andre Pielage delicate ingrepen in ruimtes, tussenruimtes en leegtes om ons de poëtische aard van de ons omringende wereld te laten zien. Ik zal met ‘Onze tuin’ een tentoonstelling neerzetten die laat zien hoe vanzelfsprekend een natuurlijke omgeving tot beeldende abstractie kan leiden en hoe vanzelfsprekend abstractie weer opgenomen kan worden door een natuurlijke omgeving.”

De Tentoonstelling is ook te bezichten tijdens het Verborgen Tuinen Festival op
9 & 10 juni (van 10.30 – 16.30 uur) en tijdens het kunstweekend Charlois,
op 23 & 24 juni van 10.00 – 17.00 uur.
