Some of my artworks will always be there in my imaginary archive, they “pop up” in my head every now and then, because they are dear to me. These are the works that I want to show on my blog in the “collections”-series, as an homage to their owners.
The people who “live with” my drawings, paintings and sculptures are cherished by me,
I am and will always be gratefull to them.
It is a precious experience to me when I’m allowed to take my work to its new surroundings myself, only then -it seems to me- I can appreciate it as an independent piece of art.

De werken in mijn denkbeeldig archief en de collecties waarin zij zijn opgenomen zijn een steun en toeverlaat. Zij die houden van-, zich ontfermen over- en willen leven met mijn werk worden door mij dan ook op handen gedragen. Het blijft een bijzondere gebeurtenis om het werk in de nieuwe omgeving te mogen bekijken en het meestal pas dán als een op zichzelf staand iets te kunnen zien.

Taipei Biennial 2012

Het ondergáán -onlangs- van de Taipei Biennial 2012 met als titel:
MODERN MONSTERS / DEATH AND LIFE OF FICTION,
in het prachtige Taipei Fine Arts Museum in Taiwan, was zéér de moeite waard.
Divers en van verrassend hoge kwaliteit. Het museum is ingedeeld met
“musea”-rond-een-thema, deel van het geheel.
Curator: Anselm Franke.
Eén kunstenaar licht ik er uit: Sun Xun.
Zijn klassieke houtsnedes worden in een animatiefilm tot leven worden gewekt.
In vliegende vaart ondermijnen ze zichzelf.
Begeleid door bommenwerpers-lawaai, schotelt Sun Xun je een oogstrelend zwartgallige visie voor.
De combinatie van geraffineerde natuurtekeningen, traditionele chinese houtsnij-technieken, cartoons, graffiti en film stoot af en trekt aan.

Uit de catalogus van de Taipei Biennial 2012 0ver Sun Xun:

The woodcut animation Some Actions Which Haven’t Been Defined Yet In The Revolution depicts the nightmarish journey of a character through a world situated between waking and dreaming, day and night, past and present, in which all known, stable boundaries—such as that between inside and outside, human and beast—have become fluid. Time is dictated by traumatic flashbacks, and the nightmare-like atmosphere of the work, which is underscored by haunting music, is evoked not by violent actions, but by the claustrophobic routines of everyday life. There are two iconic scenes that define the work—one when the protagonist pulls an insect from between his teeth and eats it alive, and the other when the protagonist masturbates. The latter scene is the climax of the film, yet shows an anticlimax of sorts, with its undirected and unfulfilled libidinous energy. The former scene evokes the metaphor of “cannibalism” as an attitude and mental condition, used by the influential author Lu Xun to describe the decay of Chinese consciousness. Lu Xun wrote The True Story of Ah Q. and was, not coincidentally, also an eminent scholar of Chinese woodcuts.

This work is Sun Xun’s first animated film based entirely on woodcuts, a traditional Chinese technique which is more than 2000 years old and which experienced a revival during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s and 1970s. Is this the revolution and the disconcerted society left in its wake that Sun Xun speaks about? More likely, it is not one specific revolution from among the many revolutions China experienced in the twentieth-century—but the ever-present effects of continuing revolutionary violence and the surreal underside of “official” accounts of revolutionary reason and propagandistic promise, where revolution appears as sanctioned terror. The work depicts experience of a world turned upside down in which the rationality of irrationality has become the rule.

Just Quist

Just Quist maakte een prachtige tentoonstelling:
‘Back and Forth‘,
bij Kunst Rotterdam Noord in de zomer van 2012.
In het centrum van de tentoonstelling hing
het schilderij Centripetal moire
dat alle aandacht naar zich toe trok.
“Centripetal moire” is inmiddels niet meer
weg te denken uit mijn dagelijks leven.

Is het een commentaar op ‘grid schilderijen’,
het grid als een onpartijdige abstractie en compositie-vorm?
Is het het schilderen van een vlek?
Voor mij is het een onmisbaar,
aandacht vragend beeld geworden,
raadselachtig, teder, gedecideerd,
als vruchteloos ingetoomde kalligrafie .
Just Quist gaf me onderstaande tekst bij het schilderij:

Centripetal moire

“The centripetal grid, in contrast to the centrifugal grid,
is a bounded figure.
Its extent is known and limited.
As opposed to the expansive or explosive character
of the centrifugal grid, the force of the centripetal grid
is contained and implosive.
Unlike the centrifugal grid,
it does not represent space beyond itself.
It is a discrete and thus emblematic form.
As a discrete and closed figure, the centripetal grid
is cut off from its context.
This discontinuity between the grid and the spatial field
creates a condition, that does not exist in open,
centrifugal organization.
As an isolated fragment, the centripetal grid posits
an outside to its own outside.
The greater spatial field becomes
not a site of immanent expansion,
but an outside that is alien to its own interior:
a spatial context that is uniquely defined as residual.”
