Text about Maria Lassnig at the exhibition
at Museum Ludwig, Köln,
that impressed me so much:

Maria Lassnig has drawn and painted for over 60 years.
Her trademark is the “Body Awareness Drawings”.
She draws, as she says, “not the body as “object”,
but the feelings from her body”.
In these drawings Lassnigs questions her bodily sensations,
the physiological underpinnings of her own existence.
Paper acts for her as a corrective,
as a mirror of herself, today just as it did 60 years ago.
She mirrors the possibility of selfpresentation- sometimes seriously,
sometimes wittily.
Her inscapes and outscapes allow the viewer to come close up
and still maintain a distance.

“…Er stonden fotoverzamelboeken, catalogi bij exposities en droomboeken vol onbegrijpelijke beelden, nu ja kunstenaarsboeken gewoon. Ik pakte er een: ’Seelenbriefe’, van Marjolijn van den Assem. Ze had zich ingeleefd in de correspondentie van Nietzsche en maakte daarbij een serie beelden.
’Onder woorden brengen van wat in je hoofd omgaat betekent toetsen van tekst en beeld aan elkaar’.

Ik bladerde door de binnenkant van haar hoofd. De grote, ontzagwekkende God uit Utrecht* was een kleine, menselijke god geworden.”

Aldus Wim Boevink in het artikel “ter aarde varen” in het dagblad Trouw van 22 mei 2009.
Wim Boevink bezocht op Hemelvaartsdag de tentoonstelling ‘Beeldschone Boeken’ in het Catherijneconvent in Utrecht en daarna de boekenmanifestatie ‘Art Books in Light’ bij W139 in Amsterdam.
SEELENBRIEFE werd door uitgeverij TAB, Timmer Art Books, tentoongesteld bij W139 Amsterdam.

25th Art Amsterdam

This picture* is a tribute to Anneke Oele,
the director of the Art Amsterdam 2009,
explaining her favourite piece of art
to the Dutch Queen Beatrix .
With 25.000 visitors this 25th Art Amsterdam
turned out to be the best visited version ever.
On Anneke Oele’s request gallerists
presented solo-shows of their
most characteristic artists,
which gave this Art Amsterdam
a Museum-like atmosphere.
